Edgware Cleaners Health and Safety Policy
Edgware Cleaners is committed to providing professional cleaning services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with cleaning activities and maintaining safe working practices on all client premises and locations where we operate.
Policy Aims and Responsibilities
The primary aim of this policy is to prevent injury, ill health and incidents arising from our cleaning operations. We will actively identify hazards, assess associated risks and implement effective control measures. Health and safety considerations will be integrated into planning, supervision and delivery of all cleaning services.
Overall responsibility for health and safety within Edgware Cleaners rests with senior management, who ensure that appropriate resources, training and supervision are provided. Managers and supervisors are responsible for implementing this policy in day-to-day operations, conducting risk assessments, issuing safe working procedures and monitoring compliance.
All employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work. They are required to follow instructions, use equipment correctly, report hazards, near misses and incidents promptly, and cooperate fully with health and safety measures.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Edgware Cleaners conducts risk assessments for cleaning tasks, workplaces and equipment. These assessments identify hazards such as slips, trips and falls, manual handling, exposure to cleaning chemicals, use of electrical equipment, work at height and lone working. Control measures are then implemented to eliminate or reduce risks to an acceptable level.
Safe systems of work are established and regularly reviewed. Employees are informed of relevant risks and trained in the correct procedures for each task they undertake, including safe use of chemicals, machinery and personal protective equipment. Where client premises present specific or unusual risks, these are assessed and appropriate instructions provided before work begins.
Training, Information and Supervision
We provide suitable and sufficient health and safety training to all employees, tailored to their roles and responsibilities. This includes induction training, task-specific instruction, refresher training and updates when procedures or equipment change. Topics typically include safe cleaning methods, safe manual handling techniques, correct use of chemicals, emergency procedures and incident reporting.
Supervisors monitor working practices to ensure that training is applied consistently and that standards are maintained. Where unsafe practices are observed, corrective action is taken promptly, and additional guidance or training is given as required.
Cleaning Chemicals and Hazardous Substances
The use of cleaning chemicals is controlled to minimise risks associated with skin contact, inhalation, ingestion and environmental contamination. We use products suitable for professional cleaning and follow manufacturer instructions at all times. Safety data and handling information are made available to employees who use or may be exposed to these substances.
Chemicals are labelled clearly and stored securely to prevent unauthorised access or accidental spillage. Only trained personnel are authorised to dilute, mix or decant chemicals. Employees are instructed never to mix products unless explicitly directed by manufacturer guidance, and to use appropriate personal protective equipment when handling hazardous substances.
Equipment, Machinery and Workplace Safety
All equipment and machinery used in our cleaning operations are selected for safety, suitability and reliability. Regular inspections and maintenance are carried out to ensure that vacuum cleaners, floor machines, carpet cleaners and other tools are safe and in good working order. Defective equipment is removed from service immediately until it is repaired or replaced.
We take reasonable steps to ensure that work areas are kept as safe as practicable while cleaning is in progress. This includes the careful placement of warning signs, managing trailing cables, securing work areas where floors are wet and maintaining good housekeeping to reduce the risk of slips, trips and falls. When working at height, only appropriate and well-maintained access equipment is used, following specific safety procedures.
Personal Protective Equipment
Where risks cannot be fully controlled by other means, suitable personal protective equipment is provided, such as gloves, eye protection, masks and appropriate footwear. Employees are instructed in the correct use, cleaning and storage of this equipment and are required to wear it as directed whenever hazards justify its use.
Accident, Incident and Near Miss Reporting
We encourage prompt reporting of all accidents, incidents and near misses, however minor they may appear. This allows us to investigate underlying causes, implement corrective actions and prevent recurrence. Records of incidents are maintained and reviewed to identify trends and areas for further improvement.
Where work is carried out on client premises, any incident involving clients, visitors or members of the public is reported in accordance with our procedures and, where applicable, any on-site arrangements agreed with the client.
Emergency Preparedness
Employees receive guidance on how to respond to emergencies that may occur during cleaning activities, such as fire, serious injury, chemical spills or other unexpected events. They are expected to follow the emergency arrangements in place at the premises where they are working, including evacuation routes, assembly points and alarm procedures.
Where necessary, specific instructions are provided for handling spillages of hazardous materials, isolating equipment and securing work areas until they are safe to enter.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
Edgware Cleaners values the input of employees and clients in improving health and safety performance. We encourage feedback on working practices, equipment and arrangements, and we consider reasonable suggestions for improvement. Health and safety procedures are reviewed regularly to reflect changes in operations, advances in best practice and lessons learned from incidents.
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed periodically and updated as necessary to ensure that it remains effective, relevant and aligned with our commitment to providing safe, reliable and professional cleaning services.
